Austin is commonly referred to as Silicon Hills, as it has established itself as a world-class tech hub. Check out the interactive map below that highlights the location of many Fortune 500 companies, destination centers, and other Austin landmarks.
Austin area residents enjoy a wide variety of education options. There are 29 public school districts, 27 charter school districts, and over 100 private schools in Central Texas. The University of Texas at Austin and 26 other public and private colleges and universities (combined enrollment of approximately 180,000) provide a large number of well-educated workers to area employers. There are an additional 95 four-year colleges and universities within 200 miles of Austin (combined enrollment of well over 400,000 students).
Austin's healthcare system rivals that of any major metropolitan area. There are 46 hospitals in the Austin area including Dell Children's Medical Center of Central Texas, a dedicated children's hospital. There are over 4,800 direct patient care physicians as well. Even as one of the fasted growing metropolitan areas in the country, Austin has a better physician / population ratio than Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio. There are approximately 5,000 licensed hospital beds. While 16 of the area's 46 hospitals are run by various non-profit and for-profit systems, the other 25 are operated by Ascension Seton, St. David's Healthcare, and Baylor Scott & White.
There's a reason why Austin is at the top of every list of places to visit, live, work, and play. While the events and festivals may bring you here, the food, the friendliness, the economy, the scenery, and the art scene will keep you here.
