Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Northwest Hills in Austin?
Northwest Hills sits just north of RM 2222, in the 78731 and 78759 ZIP codes of Travis County. It is about 7 miles from downtown, which makes it the closest-in part of Northwest Austin.
When was Northwest Hills built?
The Barrow brothers bought the land and began development in 1958, finishing in the mid 1980s. That long build-out is why the housing varies so much from street to street.
What kind of houses are in Northwest Hills?
Mostly single-storey ranch houses, with traditional and contemporary styles mixed in. Homes average over 2,700 square feet with three to six bedrooms, and many have been renovated inside and out.
Does Northwest Hills have hill country views?
Many properties do. The neighborhood sits on the edge of the Texas Hill Country, and the elevation is what produces both the views and the steeper lots.
What schools are near Northwest Hills?
Doss Elementary School on 7005 Northledge Drive and Murchison Middle School on 3700 N Hills Drive stand in or beside the neighborhood. That is where the campuses are, not a statement about who attends them. Austin ISD assigns schools by street address, and assignments can change. Check the current one for a specific property with Austin ISD School Finder, which is the authoritative source. We do not publish attendance zones, because a zone we printed last year is not a zone you can rely on this year.
